Murray was great last night. One goal was a high stick and should not have counted, one was a deflection n which he had no chance. Other than that he was great.

Thanks again.

That's a surprise because as it was pointed out on this site many times, Murray was the biggest reason the Pens have sucked the last two years.

Murray is known for being streaky I believe? So we'll see what happens throughout this season / his contract.

Oh, +1 for the title.

Games like last night will make us miss a Honqvist type player. One that will get in front of the net and make the tendy uncomfortable. I only got to watch the second half of the game, but from what I saw we had a lot of skill and most of it was in the perimeter....

Did anyone watch Votacek rip into a reporter last night after the game??? He has a new fan... Good for him!

Let's look at High Density Shots. (Natural Stat Trick) has Jarry facing 31 shots against while 14 are HDS. Hart saw 59 shots with 15 HDS.

Does that absolve Jarry? No, he needs to play better. It also shows the Pens need to play better team defense.

One more thing, we did not out play the Flyers because we got more shots. The Flyers outplayed us by limiting our ability to get high quality shots while getting many more great chances of their own. I've said on here for years you win games by winning the front of the net.

Jarry has to be better and I have no doubt he will be. I said this after game 1. The trend the last two years has been the following:

-Pens play a perimeter game and don't get bodies to the net enough.
-Conversely the Pens don't do a good job of keeping teams to the perimeter.

The Pens largely outplayed MTL in the way they outplayed PHI last night and the results were no different.

O'Connor practicing with the main squad today.

There's a likelihood McCann gets suspended, so he will draw into the lineup if that's the case.

Lifted this from DK's site....

Is this going to be the team that erupted from the opening faceoff of both these games, rendering the Flyers flat-footed for the first few minutes?

Or is this going to be the team that allows that aggression to backfire via odd-man breaks and other high danger chances, of which Philadelphia would get a gaudy 17 over these two games?

Is this going to be a team that controls play to the tune of a 67-45 dominance in shots and an NHL-high 58.45% Corsi For percentage at five-on-five over these two games?

Or the team that, once special teams make savvy a priority over speed and even skill, allow the power play and PK to lag the way they did here?

Is this going to be the team that brings back the hard-to-play-against mantra?

Point number 2 is what I was fearing when Rutherford started talking about trying to replicate the '16 cup brand. They think speed and skill are the only ingredients. We all know there's some much more to it from the defensive side of the puck.

Every article you just complain about a player you previously said would make a positive impact for the pens. It get's old.

it doesnt matter if we control 65% of the game if we don't know how to handle the other 35.

When the flyers dominated early our players looked like headless chickens running around.

Rarely a team will dominate a whole game, but right now it looks like we just panic when we're not in control. People are all over the place, it ugly.

Probably gonna be ugly hockey from all teams for a few weeks with no preseason and shortened training camps. While they don't have a huge margin for poor showings in games, I expect them to be a little bit more structures 25 games in, intra-team scrimmages on do so much.

Wild predictions:

Murray candidate for vezina this year
Pens pick 9th overall on 21 draft ( unless they trade it away)
Letang and Guentzal or Malkin shipped out by trade deadline.

Our softness in front of our net is only exceeded by us shooting the puck long range and letting the opposing goalie get a good long look before he catches it.

This is what concerned me the most when they traded Hornqvist and Rutherford started talking about replicating what got them the cup in '16. You can tell they "believe" they're capable of doing it, but in reality they're not even close.
- madmike71

The confounding thing about that is that Hornqvist was a big part of that winning formula despite his lack of speed, but they did nothing to replace him. Yeah, Hart played great, but that's easier to do when you have a clear view of every shot.

With Murray it's simple. When his technique is good so is he (except the glove, but he plays well enough to cover for that when he's on).

Around here, when he was struggling, he'd stay deep in his crease and have trouble finding his angles. Either our goalie coach was unable to get him on track, or he just didn't listen because he is a (over?) confident man.

Can you imagine if Minn manages to get a lottery pick for Zucker? Damn wasn’t a fan of that trade then but it’ll be that much worse if this pick is top 5 or even top 10.

Quite easy to imagine for me. Super realistic this year haha... In saying that I by no means have wrote them off at all, I'm actually feeling better about them now than I did last week haha, just think it's a nuts random condensed season with short training camps and covid going around, random things will happen and the division is tough as F. Lots of things could derail the Pens this season.

Perimeter team that can’t defend inside the dots. Every defender we have can skate but what does it matter when you can’t get the puck. Bruce Boudreau said it so well about a 100 times....the Pens need to cleanup in front of their own net and get to the oppositions net. Our system has to go which means we need a coaching change .
